Work Detail The unofficial end to summer is now behind us, but construction season is not.

Topekans are already used to reduced speeds and construction but Tuesday morning another area will begin to see work…bringing with it some notable traffic changes. That construction will start on the bridge along southbound U.S. Highway 75 over U.S. Highway 24. The Kansas Department of Transportation says the work is routine maintenance. Kim Qualls, KDOT Public Information Officer, says “There are two things on bridges that, typically we have to go back and do a lot of work on throughout the life of the bridges and that is the expansion joints…we will replace those as well as a lot of times we work on the bridge approach pavement.”

KDOT anticipates the work will last through November depending on the weather. Their annual goal is to complete road projects by Thanksgiving to prevent construction headaches for travelers. Work will begin in the left lane and move to the right…taking place during the day Monday through Saturday until completed.

Detours are posted in the area. Traffic on Highway 75 over the bridge will be down to one lane. Westbound Highway 24 traffic will travel past the closed ramp and exit at Menoken road then head back on eastbound 24 to access southbound 75.

Maintenance work on the bridge deck will also take place during this time. KDOT’s biggest piece of advice for drivers – allow time for delays. Leave early and prepare for traffic. Signs and message boards will remind you of those traffic closures.
