In a groundbreaking move, the Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) has inked agreements with two of the six Independent Power Producers (IPPs) to spearhead the development of the Merafong Local Municipality’s solar farm. First announced by Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi during the State of the Province Address in February 2024, the project marks a significant stride towards bolstering the region’s energy infrastructure. Spanning 1600 hectares of land generously donated by Sibanye Stillwater, the solar farm will house a photovoltaic power station capable of generating 800 megawatts upon completion, providing a substantial boost to the electricity grid. Managed and developed as a Public Private Partnership (PPP) by a Non-Profit Company (NPC), Bokamoso Ba Rona, the project’s founding partners include the Far West Rand Dolomitic Water Association (FWRDWA), Sibanye Stillwater, West Rand District Municipality, and the Gauteng Infrastructure Financial Agency (GIFA) representing GPG. The IPPs have been tasked with securing their own funding and obtaining all necessary permits for site development, ensuring that the project progresses at no cost to the provincial government. Commenting on the initiative, MEC for Finance Jacob Mamabolo hailed it as a promising model for revitalizing economically distressed regions, emphasizing the potential of Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) to drive meaningful change even amid fiscal constraints. MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Mzi Khumalo underscored the critical importance of reliable energy supply for economic growth, job creation, and alleviating the impact of load shedding on vulnerable households, affirming the project’s significance in bolstering Gauteng’s energy resilience. |
