Work Detail Bihar CM Nitish Kumar on Monday said providing quality education is a challenge but his government has taken several ground-breaking steps during the last 10 years to enhance gross enrolment ratio (GER) and improve standard of education in the state.

Addressing a Teachers' Day function here, the CM recounted his government's steps like providing free cycle to girls, free uniform to all schoolchildren, construction of new school buildings, addition of new classrooms and construction of toilets in schools. "In 2005-06, around 12% children were out of schools in Bihar, but it has come down to just 1%," he said.

Nitish said steps, including imparting effective training to teachers, were being taken to improve the quality of education in the state. "We are committed to providing quality education to all," he said, adding he wanted just three things from educational institutions - complete syllabus on time, hold examination on time and ensure publication of results on time.

Referring to Intermediate examination toppers scam, CM thanked the media and common people for exposing the irregularities in the Bihar School Examination Board. He said the toughest possible action would be taken against the persons involved in the scam. Nitish also said he would not rest till possibilities of committing fresh irregularities in the BSEB were ruled out. "Education department has been asked in clear terms to ensure that no fresh irregularity is committed in the examination system. "We have taken the merit scam as a challenge," he assured the audience.

Referring to his 'Saat Nischay' programme, the CM said besides improving the quality of education, his government was also trying to promote vocational education and skill development so that the youths, who could not pursue higher education after Class XII, could get employment through skill development.

The boys and girls, who want to pursue higher education after Class XII, would be provided student credit card up to Rs4 lakh, while others would be imparted communication skill and computer training as part of skill development. One crore youths will be imparted training in communication skill in the next five years, the CM said.
State's education and IT minister Ashok Choudhary and principal secretary (education) D S Gangwar also addressed the function.
