About 50 practices entered the competition last year. The six chosen to develop their proposals for the museum building over the next few months are: Superstructure Architecture and Christ & Gantenbein (Switzerland) DRDH Architects and Jamie Fobert Architects (UK) NoAarchitecten (Belgium) and EM2N Architekten AG (Switzerland) and Sergison Bates Architects (UK) OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van Severen (Belgium) and SO–IL Office (USA) Robbrecht and Daem Architects, Animal Donckblancke Architects and Laura Muyldermans (Belgium) Studio Nauta Bedaux (Netherlands) and Feilden Fowles Architects (UK) Among those who missed out are Zaha Hadid Architects, Bjarke Ingels, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Jean Nouvel and Snøhetta. The new building will allow the museum to host international exhibitions from wider communities in a sustainable way. M HKA, as the museum is called, is based in a converted grain silo in the north of the city. A previous expansion attracted proposals from companies such as Caruso St John, SANAA and Thomas Phifer, but was ultimately cancelled. The Flemish government will announce the winner of the contest in 2025.
