Work Detail Recognized for innovation, aesthetic merit and excellence in safety, four projects built by PCL Constructors Canada Inc. (Toronto)—Fairmont Royal York Decarbonization, Rogers Centre Renovation Phase I, Lakeridge Gardens and 160 Front Street West—were presented with2024 Builder Awards by Ontario General Contractors Association (OGCA). The Builder Awards, presented at the OGCA’s Construction Symposium on April 12, 2024, showcase the latest and greatest projects built across the province of Ontario. A panel of judges chose between a robust slate of entries, differentiated by categories and construction value, to pick 22 exceptional projects that have demonstrated innovation, outstanding safety performance and overall excellence in building. “From industry-leading sustainability efforts to complex and innovative builds with fast-track solutions, each winning project showcases PCL’s relentless focus on innovation and smarter building practices which enables us to deliver our clients’ vision safely with quality, cost and schedule certainty,” said Monique Buckberger, vice president and district manager, PCL Toronto. “Receiving these prestigious accolades alongside our industry peers is attributed to the strong collaboration between our clients, partners and dedicated workforce on these four standout projects. Congratulations to everyone involved in receiving this well-deserved recognition.” Fairmont Royal York Decarbonization: Best Environmental Project in Group 3 – Project Value from $25 Million to $75 Million A landmark in the city of Toronto for nearly a century, Fairmont Royal York has stepped into a new era focused on charting the path to net zero. In 2021, KingSett Capital set out with a bold goal to decarbonize the historic 95-year-old hotel. This project, which demonstrates PCL’s expertise in Sustainable Retrofits and Decarbonization represents the largest hotel retrofit of its kind within the Fairmont global brand portfolio. Together with an expert team of partners, Fairmont Royal York achieved Canada Green Building Council’s (CaGBC) Zero Carbon Building – Performance Standard certification. Rogers Centre Renovation Phase I: Best Renovation Project in Group 4 – Project Value from $75 Million to $150 Million A day that went down in club history, the Toronto Blue Jays (TBJ) unveiled the newly transformed Rogers Centre in April 2023 following a complex, fast-track renovation in just six months. On July 28, 2022, the Toronto Blue Jays announced multi-year renovation close to $400 million that would transform Rogers Centre from a stadium into a ballpark through a series of projects focused on modernizing the fan experience and building world-class player facilities. This intricate renovation project involved approximately 14 individual projects rolled into one. Together, PCL and trade partners executed a six-month accelerated construction schedule to bring the Toronto Blue Jays’ vision and Populous’ design to life. Lakeridge Gardens: Best Building in Group 5 – Project Value from $150 Million to $300 Million While the life of a traditional construction project can take years to complete, Lakeridge Health, Infrastructure Ontario, PCL and an expert team of consultants and trade partners collaborated to build Lakeridge Gardens, a new long-term care home, in record time during the COVID-19 pandemic. Fueled by a relentless passion to achieve a common goal, Lakeridge Gardens was delivered in only 13 months of construction as Ontario’s first pilot project under Infrastructure Ontario’s Accelerated Build Pilot program. With a never-before achieved design and construction schedule that required out-of-the-box thinking and a near perfect execution strategy, the outcome is credited to all partners whose passionate pursuit of providing residents with a modern, comfortable and safe place to call home, enabled the project to be completed in just over one year. 160 Front Street West: Best Building in Group 6 – Project Value over $300 Million Cadillac Fairview’s 160 Front Street West, a new distinctive office tower in the heart of city, stands as a modern marvel in Toronto’s skyline. Considered the seventh tallest building in Toronto, the 47-storey, 775-foot-high tower brings a unique and uncommon approach to building in the city with a primarily steel structure and an architecturally complex curved profile. Integrating history with modern architecture, 160 Front Street West features a historical six-story façade restored from a 119-year-old heritage building. The Class A tower, located at the corner of Front and Simcoe, achieved substantial completion on December 18, 2023.
