Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) announced that the development of a 1.5GW Al Ajban solar PV project has been awarded to an international consortium of EDF Renewables, Korea Western Power Company (KOWEPO), and UAE-based Masdar as the local shareholder.
EWEC received four bids including ACWA Power (TADAWUL:2082), EDF Renewables, Marubeni Corp (TYO:8002), and an alliance between Jinko Power and JERA. The winning consortium has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with EWEC.
In line with the PPA, the UAE utility company will pay for the net electrical energy supplied by the plant. Meanwhile, EDF Renewables and its partners will develop the large-scale solar park, and begin to operate it in Q3 of 2026.
Located in the city of Al Ajban, Abu Dhabi, the plant is expected to power 160,000 UAE households, reducing the emirate’s carbon emissions by 2.4m MT per annum.
Solar in the UAE
Solar energy deployment is increasingly prevalent in Abu Dhabi. A 2GW Al Dhafra solar park was approved in late 2023, with another large project in the emirate on the way: a 1.5 GW Al-Khazna solar park in the Al Khazna area of Abu Dhabi.
EWEC aims to supply over 50% of Abu Dhabi’s electricity from renewable and clean energy sources by 2030, with the latest projections suggesting 1.4 GW of new solar PV every year from 2027 to 2037. |
