Work Detail The project, of 10 MW in lithium ion batteries, has been possible from a donation of more than 20 million dollars from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Cuba. On the Cuban island of Juventud, a 10 MW storage system in lithium ion batteries for 20 minutes has been inaugurated, “which is equivalent to storing 3 MW of energy and installing an energy management system that in its operation must "perform power balance and frequency control," according to an official communication. This project has had the support of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Cuba, which in addition to a donation of 20 million dollars has offered technical assistance. It is assured that the system on the Isla de la Juventud will allow the incorporation of approximately 15 MWp additional to those already existing, “with which the territory would reach approximately 20% energy production with renewable sources,” according to Alfredo López. Valdés, general director of the Electrical Union. Furthermore, this project, promoted by JICA in Cuba, is described as favoring the assembly of photovoltaic parks, “which will reduce the use of fossil fuels in generation.” The inauguration of the work was attended by the member of the Political Bureau and prime minister, Manuel Marrero Cruz; the Minister of Energy and Mines, Vicente De La O Levy; the Japanese ambassador to Cuba, Hirata Kenji; the resident representative of JICA in the Greater Antilles, Ashida Tatsuya, and other Cuban and Japanese authorities. With a population of around 85 thousand inhabitants, the Isla de la Juventud is located 60 kilometers southwest of the island of Cuba.
