Danish fund manager Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) and Düsseldorf-headquartered energy company Uniper have teamed up to work on the production, transport, and marketing of green hydrogen from the HØST PtX Esbjerg project to Germany.
Powered entirely by renewables, HØST PtX Esbjerg will produce up to 140,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per annum for use in the chemicals industry, predominantly expected in the German market.
It is expected that HØST, located on the Danish Westcoast, will be connected to the German hydrogen backbone via a new hydrogen pipeline before the start of 2028.
The pipeline from Denmark to Germany will be developed by the transmission system operator Energinet in cooperation with Gasunie Deutschland Transport Services. This will enable access to the consumption sites in Germany and help bring competitively priced green hydrogen to the German market.
Together, CIP and Uniper will develop a model to bring up to 140,000 tons of green hydrogen annually to customers in Germany. Uniper intends to include the green hydrogen from HØST in its green gas portfolio and supply the industry’s needs with varying flexibility profiles and with different contract lengths.
HØST PtX Esbjerg will use renewable resources to produce green hydrogen that can be supplied to the future hydrogen grid or converted into 600,000 tonnes of green ammonia that can be used as feedstock for fertilizer production or as green fuel in the maritime industry.
The flexible operation of the plant will ensure efficient use of the electricity being fed into the Danish energy system from the planned 10GW offshore wind build-out in the North Sea. Furthermore, the heat from hydrogen and ammonia production will be utilized for the heating of 15,000 households in the Esbjerg/Varde area. |
