Work Detail AMEA Power, a leading renewable energy company in the Middle East, has finalized a significant deal in South Africa. The company has successfully secured a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Eskom, a major utility company in the region, for the 120MW Doornhoek Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Project. The project, awarded through Bid Window 6 of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement (REIPPP), signifies AMEA Power’s strategic entry into South Africa’s rapidly expanding renewable energy market. AMEA Power holds the majority stake in the USD120 million Solar PV Project and has collaborated with African women-owned companies, Ziyanda Energy and Dzimuzwo Energy, as partners. Standard Bank South Africa will provide debt funding, while the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) will contribute equity funding for the local partners. The signing ceremony, held on April 30th, 2024, was attended by notable figures including His Excellency Gwede Mantashe, Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy of South Africa, Mr. Segomoco M. Scheppers, Eskom Group Executive for Transmission, and Mr. Hussain Al Nowais, Chairman of AMEA Power. Also present were His Excellency, Mahash Saeed Alhameli, the UAE Ambassador to South Africa, Sibongile Mduli, CEO of Ziyanda Energy, and Lusani Madali, Managing Director of Dzimuzwo Energy. Situated near Klerksdorp in the North West province, the Doornhoek Solar Project is expected to produce over 325GWH of clean energy annually, providing power to an estimated 97,000 households and offsetting 330,000 tonnes of carbon emissions each year upon completion. This initiative aligns with South Africa’s target of renewable energy constituting 22% of the energy mix by 2030. In a bid to strengthen its presence in the South African market, AMEA Power established an office in Johannesburg last year, serving as the company’s regional hub for Southern Africa. Hussain Al Nowais, Chairman of AMEA Power, expressed pride in the company’s role in advancing South Africa’s transition to sustainable energy solutions, emphasizing the Doornhoek Solar Project’s significant environmental and socio-economic contributions. AMEA Power’s proactive involvement in this transformative endeavor underscores its commitment to delivering clean, reliable energy solutions that benefit both communities and the environment.
