Eletrobras, a key player in the energy sector, has taken another step towards the development of renewable hydrogen technologies by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the government of Maranhão. The collaboration seeks to supply renewable energy for future industrial projects in the state, with a focus on low-carbon hydrogen production.
Ivan Monteiro, President of Eletrobras, emphasized the company’s commitment to inspiring the energy transition through innovative solutions that reduce carbon emissions while fostering economic and social development in Brazil. The memorandum underscores Eletrobras’ leadership in offering sustainable energy solutions, particularly for electricity-intensive industries.
With a strong presence in Maranhão and the Northeast region, Eletrobras aims to reinforce its leading role in the energy transition. The partnership aligns with Maranhão’s State Green Hydrogen Program (PEH2V) and leverages the state’s extensive railway network, strategic port infrastructure, and Eletrobras Eletronorte’s transmission lines and substations.
Governor Carlos Brandão highlighted the significance of the partnership for Maranhão, emphasizing the state’s favorable conditions for green hydrogen production and Eletrobras’ expertise in handling such projects.
In a related development, Eletrobras Furnas’ renewable hydrogen plant at the Itumbiara hydroelectric plant received the first Brazilian renewable hydrogen certification from the Electric Energy Trading Chamber (CCEE) last year. The company is currently working on multiple projects at Itumbiara, including studies on new hydrogen production technologies, workforce training, and battery storage.
Additionally, Eletrobras recently entered into a memorandum with Paul Wurth, a Luxembourg-based company, to explore opportunities in the production and use of renewable hydrogen in industrial processes in Brazil. |
