The Copperbelt Energy Corporation (CEC) achieved a milestone in sustainable energy operations with the inauguration of the 60-megawatt Itimpi Solar Photovoltaic Power Station in Garneton, Kitwe. The esteemed presence of H.E. Mr Hakainde Hichilema, President of the Republic of Zambia, alongside other dignitaries and stakeholders, marked the occasion with significance.
President Hichilema, during the unveiling ceremony, lauded CEC’s initiative, stating that the establishment of the Itimpi Solar Plant aligns with Zambia’s objective to diversify its energy sources, emphasizing its contribution to the nation’s economic development agenda.
CEC’s Board Chairperson, Mr London Mwafulilwa, reiterated the company’s dedication to collaborative efforts with the government and industry peers to propel the electricity sector forward and foster socio-economic growth in Zambia.
The Managing Director of CEC, Mr Owen Silavwe, underscored the project’s importance, highlighting its potential to contribute significantly to the country’s energy supply, especially in light of recent challenges such as droughts, which emphasized the need for sustainable energy solutions.
The Itimpi Solar Photovoltaic Power Station, equipped with advanced tracking technology, boasts an impressive annual generation capacity of 130 GWh. With 109,144 mono-crystalline bifacial solar modules spread across an area of 80 hectares, the plant is poised to offset approximately 122,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually, aligning with Zambia’s commitments to reduce carbon emissions.
The project, financed through the first tranche of CEC Renewables’ USD 200 million Green Bond, signifies CEC’s proactive stance towards renewable energy investments. Plans for future solar developments, including a 126MW solar plant scheduled for construction in 2025, demonstrate CEC’s long-term commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
CEC’s investment in renewable energy not only demonstrates corporate social responsibility but also environmental stewardship. During the construction phase of the Itimpi project, over 1,220 skilled and unskilled workers were employed, fostering economic opportunities. Additionally, CEC collaborated with the Forestry Department to ensure responsible land clearance practices.
The commissioning of the Itimpi Solar Photovoltaic Power Station marks a significant stride in CEC’s journey towards a diversified and sustainable energy mix. This achievement solidifies CEC’s position as a frontrunner in the energy transmission sector while contributing to Zambia’s sustainable development goals.
