Work Detail A project by the NGO Revolusolar will bring solar energy to the indigenous school in the Terra Preta community and will train local residents through vocational training courses. Nextracker announces an investment of $25,000 in the Kurasí Tury project, a Revolusolar pilot for the development of a new sustainable and affordable energy model for indigenous communities in the Amazon. Organizations such as Tardezinha, UCB and the Honnold Foundation are also part of the project. In 2022, the Kurasí Tury project, which in the Nheengatu language means Energy from the Sun, installed a photovoltaic system and an inverter at the Arú Waimi Indigenous Municipal School, located in the Terra Preta indigenous community, 55 kilometers from Manaus (Amazon state). . In total, 8.2 kilowatts peak (kWp) were generated. A total of 20 local residents were trained as solar PV installers to ensure skilled labor to maintain the installed PV system, and six workshops on solar energy and climate change were held on site to keep the community committed to the topic and to the photovoltaic systems now present. The project counts on the support of the Coordinadora de Pueblos Indígenas de Manaos and Surrounding Areas (COPIME), the Association of Indigenous Communities of Terra Preta (ACINCTP) and the Federal Institute of Amazonas (IFAM). Generation X access to renewable energy Currently, the states of the Legal Amazon are responsible for the distribution of more than 27% of Brazils electricity generation. However, more than 14% of the regions population (almost 1 million people) does not have access to the electricity generated in the National Interconnected System (SIN), according to data from the Climate Policy Initiative (IPC). As a result, to meet the demand of the population, the Amazon, which exports renewable energy to other Brazilian states, has to resort to fossil fuels, responsible for several environmental problems, including the greenhouse effect. A report from Revolusolar notes that, in November 2023, the population of the Terra Preta community spent nine days without electricity from the grid. During this period, families relied exclusively on electricity provided by the photovoltaic system installed at the school, the only place that does not suffer prolonged blackouts. The donated money went towards the second phase of the project, which began in December 2023 to power the health center, community center and water pumping system. Of the total installed capacity, 1.3 MWh of energy has been generated. “We are delighted to contribute to this important project for the residents of the Terra Preta community. For us, solar energy goes beyond the generation of clean energy and participating in initiatives like this reinforces our purpose of strengthening local culture and improving the quality of life, promoting the socioeconomic development of communities," comments the senior director of Nextracker Business Development, Nelson Falcão. Nextracker is responsible for supplying advanced solar tracker technology to centralized generation companies that produce large-scale photovoltaic energy. With software based on integrated machine learning, the tracker is responsible for positioning the rows of photovoltaic modules individually, depending on factors such as shading, climate and geographical conditions of the plant, with the aim of making the most of the solar period. and increase power generation by 20% to 30% compared to fixed modules.
