In a significant development towards promoting renewable energy and reducing carbon emissions, the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), Électricité du Laos (EDL), Chiyoda Corporation (CYD), and Mitsubishi Company (Thailand) Ltd. (MCT) have signed a memorandum of Cooperation (MOC). The agreement aims to study and develop the transboundary use of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) to import renewable energy from Lao PDR for green hydrogen and ammonia production in potential locations across Thailand. The signing ceremony took place at the EGAT Headquarters in Nonthaburi Province, witnessed by key representatives from the participating organizations.
EGAT Governor, Mr. Thepparat Theppitak, highlighted the importance of the memorandum as a continuation of efforts initiated in 2023 with leading Japanese companies to explore clean hydrogen and ammonia production. EGAT plans to leverage renewable energy sources, particularly hydropower generation in Lao PDR, to reduce the cost of clean energy for hydrogen production in Thailand. This initiative aligns with Thailand’s goals of promoting clean energy, reducing carbon emissions, and achieving Carbon Neutrality and Net Zero Emissions sustainably.
Managing Director of EDL, Mr. Vongsakoun Yingyong, emphasized Lao PDR’s potential as a renewable energy source and its grid connection with EGAT. This collaboration presents an opportunity to leverage Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) in green hydrogen and ammonia projects, fostering cross-border cooperation and advancing the transition towards green energy.
Mr. Yasuhiro Inoue, General Manager of CYD’s Hydrogen Business Department, expressed optimism about the cooperation’s potential to drive green hydrogen and ammonia production. CYD, as a leading engineering company, is committed to providing technical support and contributing to clean energy development in Thailand, Lao PDR, and Japan.
Senior Vice President of MCT, Mr. Kazuhiro Watanabe, highlighted the significance of the study in expanding green hydrogen and ammonia production in Thailand. By leveraging the RECs mechanism to import renewable energy from Lao PDR, this collaboration aims to establish a sustainable source of green hydrogen production in Thailand, supporting regional clean energy development and contributing to global Carbon Neutrality goals.
