Work Detail The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) recently finalized a power purchase agreement with SkyPower, an energy company based in the United Arab Emirates. Named the Green Giant project, it aims to supply 500 megawatts (MW) of solar power, capable of providing electricity to approximately 2 million households in Zimbabwe. The signing ceremony was attended by various senior government officials. Moyo emphasized during the signing ceremony that the solar energy initiative signifies the government’s commitment to combat climate change by reducing carbon emissions. He highlighted the significance of integrating solar power into the national grid, stressing its role in enhancing energy security and fostering a transition to a green economy. The collaboration between ZETDC and SkyPower originated during COP27 in Sharm El Sheikh, where a memorandum of understanding was signed for the development of 500MW of solar power. Gurupira noted that the projects under this agreement would help alleviate the country’s current power shortages. He also highlighted ZETDC’s financial readiness, ensuring the capacity to sustainably support the project’s success. The project entails constructing three major solar power plants: a 100MW plant in Manhizhe, Midlands Province, a 70MW plant in Mazowe District, Mashonaland Central Province, and a 130MW plant in Matobo District, Matabeleland South Province.
