Work Detail In a significant move towards sustainable industrial practices, Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC – Masdar, a global leader in renewable energy, and Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA), the world’s largest ‘premium aluminium’ producer, have inked a strategic alliance to collaborate on aluminium decarbonisation initiatives and foster low-carbon aluminium growth prospects. The signing ceremony, graced by the presence of His Excellency Dr Sultan Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, and Chairman of Masdar, marks a pivotal step in addressing the environmental challenges posed by the energy-intensive aluminium production process. Under the alliance, Masdar and EGA will embark on joint ventures aimed at the development of renewable energy projects, potentially incorporating battery storage and green hydrogen production facilities. These efforts are geared towards facilitating the decarbonisation of EGA’s existing operations within the UAE and future ventures in the country. Moreover, the partnership extends beyond borders as the two entities pledge to collaborate internationally, with Masdar leveraging its expertise to support EGA in powering new aluminium production facilities with renewable energy sources. Mohamed Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar, expressed his pride in the collaboration, emphasizing its significance in accelerating the journey towards Net Zero. He underscored the importance of leveraging synergies between organizations to drive environmental sustainability while bolstering economic growth. In alignment with Masdar’s mission, Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, CEO of Emirates Global Aluminium, highlighted the pivotal role of aluminium in the global decarbonisation agenda. He stressed the potential for sustainable aluminium production to meet soaring demand while ensuring low-carbon growth. EGA’s track record includes pioneering achievements in sustainable aluminium production, notably becoming the world’s first company to commercially produce aluminium using solar power. The production of CelestiAL solar aluminium, a hallmark of EGA’s commitment to sustainability, reached nearly 39 thousand tonnes in 2021 and soared to 66 thousand tonnes in 2023. Established in 2006, Masdar continues to solidify its position as a clean energy powerhouse, with a presence in over 40 countries and a robust portfolio of renewable energy projects exceeding 20 GW in capacity. The company remains steadfast in its pursuit of achieving at least 100 GW of total renewable energy capacity and an annual green hydrogen production capacity of up to 1 million tonnes by 2030. With EGA accounting for a significant portion of global aluminium production and Masdar spearheading renewable energy initiatives, their alliance holds promise for driving substantial progress towards a greener, more sustainable future for the aluminium industry and beyond.
