Work Detail Tunisia and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) inked two agreements to kickstart new technical cooperation projects in the areas of productivity enhancement and clean energy. According to a press release from JICA, the completion of both projects is anticipated by mid-2024. The initial agreement focuses on the “Kaizen” Quality and Productivity Improvement Project and the Promotion of Business Development Services (Phase III). This initiative aims to expand upon the achievements of previous phases by introducing the Kaizen concept to additional sectors and regions within Tunisia. It also seeks to solidify Tunisia’s role as a hub for Kaizen dissemination in Africa, especially in French-speaking regions, while supporting efforts to institutionalize the concept domestically. The second agreement pertains to the Low Carbon and Stable Supply Project for Tunisia’s Electricity System, specifically targeting the enhancement of STEG (STEG Dispatching Centre) engineers’ capacity in managing the electricity grid. This project is tailored to address the challenges posed by the growing integration of renewable energy sources into Tunisia’s power grid. With these agreements finalized, JICA is set to commence the recruitment of Japanese experts across various disciplines for each project. These experts will collaborate with their Tunisian counterparts, transferring Japanese technology and expertise to ensure the successful implementation of these technical cooperation endeavors. Aside from deploying Japanese experts, the technical support for these projects will encompass training sessions in Tunisia and Japan tailored to the specific requirements of each project. Additionally, essential equipment and software necessary for executing planned activities and achieving desired outcomes will be supplied. The signing ceremony was attended by various dignitaries, including Minister of Industry, Mines and Energy Fatma Thabet Chiboub, Japanese Ambassador to Tunisia Osuga Takeshi, JICA Resident Representative to Tunisia Miyata Mayumi, Director General of Electricity and Energy Transition Belhassen Chiboub, and Deputy Director General of STEG Nejib Chtourou.
