The Engie Chile project has 232 containers that are distributed among the 58 inverters of the solar plant, and allows energy to be supplied for 5 hours, which is equivalent to a delivery of 200 GWh on average per year.
The President of Chile, Gabriel Boric, led the inauguration ceremony on Tuesday of the BESS Coya Storage Battery Park, located in the commune of María Elena and owned by the French multinational Engie.
BESS Coya, located in the commune of María Elena, Antofagasta region; It has a storage capacity of 638 MWh, with 139 MW of installed capacity. Its technology is based on the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and uses lithium batteries to store the renewable energy generated by the 180 MW Coya PV Photovoltaic Park, also owned by Engie Chile and which entered into commercial operation last week.
Through 232 containers that are evenly distributed among the 58 inverters of the solar plant, it allows energy to be supplied for 5 hours, which is equivalent to a delivery of 200 GWh on average per year.
Currently, the company has two storage systems in operation: the recently inaugurated BESS Coya (139 MW/638 MWh), which is, according to Engie, the initiative with the largest capacity in Latin America; and BESS Arica, which served as a pilot project. Added to this are BESS Tamaya (68 MW/418 MWh) and BESS Capricornio (48 MW/264 MWh), both located in the Antofagasta region and currently under construction.
In addition, last week it announced its fifth project with this technology. The company will convert the old Tocopilla Thermal Complex, where the coal-fired units operated, into a storage plant. The initiative called BESS Tocopilla will have an installed capacity of 116 MW/660 MWh. |
