In one of the first high-impact works promoted by the new management at the head of the city of Buenos Aires, the construction of a bridge designed to triple the circulation capacity of vehicles, but also pedestrians and cyclists, appears on the horizon. The structure will be attached to an existing one in an area where a significant transformation occurred, with a change of uses, and surrounded by sports clubs, access routes and educational entities.
In the coming days, the Buenos Aires government will launch the call for bids to reformulate the Labruna bridge, between the River Plate stadium and the new Innovation Park, to connect the vehicular flow from Illia, Lugones, that coming from Ciudad Universitaria and from Libertador Avenue. It will do so by adding lanes to the existing bridge, with new traffic directions, access and egress roundabouts and other functionalities that are being studied.
The project consists of the retrofitting of the bridge through the incorporation of new vehicular entry and exit branches for the avenues and a pedestrian walkway of dimensions in accordance with the new pedestrian and cyclist demand.

The lanes that currently operate in both directions will be used, once the work is completed, from Ciudad Universitaria towards Avenida del Libertador. In the opposite direction, vehicles will be able to access Lugones and Illia from Campos Salles Street, which opened next to the Innovation Park, where the Federal Shooting Center operated. Upon reaching the limit of the new public space there will be a connection that surrounds it to reach the avenues.
When thinking about the proposal, the Buenos Aires Ministry of Infrastructure took three variables into account. The bridge is part of the citys strategic development vision and aims to link or bridge the interference between train tracks and highways. Secondly, the initiative will enhance the development of that area by allowing a better link between the Innovation Park, the Belgrano neighborhood, Ciudad Universitaria, the clubs, the marinas, the park and also the Jorge Newbery Metropolitan Airport. In detail, according to official information, the new Northwest lane will allow the crossing from the Innovation Park to Ciudad Universitaria and Cantilo Avenue. It will have a two-lane viaduct that crosses Lugones, Cantilo and Belgrano Norte. While the Southeast lane will facilitate the crossing from Cantilo towards the Innovation Park and the entry into Lugones from Ciudad Universitaria.
Meanwhile, the collectors on Lugones Avenue and the northern head of the Innovation Park will connect Campos Salles Street with the Northwest, Udaondo and Lugones branch. At the northern head, an elevated plaza will be created above the collectors and with pedestrian and cyclist access through ramps, terraces and stairs.
The pedestrian bridge, which will be widened, will offer scheduled activities such as a new neighborhood park. It is being studied to “install open plazas, flexible spaces for markets or fairs, embankments and terraces for theatrical performances or expression of street art, and equipped spaces for rest,” according to the project.
The walkway over the bridge can be accessed by pedestrians from five points: the north gate of Ciudad Universitaria, the path coming from the UBA sports field (subject to approval by that institution), the platforms of the Ciudad Universitaria station of the Belgrano Norte, Campos Salles Boulevard and Udaondo Avenue.
Both stairs and ramps will have rest spaces. Although the minimum width for ramps and stairs is 1.80m between plinths, the measurement was expanded to between 2.50m and 4.00m for greater comfort for pedestrians. A U-shaped concrete guide will be included on the sides of the stairs to give bicycles an alternative route to the pedestrian ramps.
