Work Detail This is the Tocopilla Thermal Complex (CTT), which formerly operated on coal and fuel oil, which will now house a 660 MWh BESS storage system, with an installed capacity of 116 MW The Chilean subsidiary of the energy company Engie has announced that in the facilities where the Tocopilla Thermal Complex (CTT) operated until September 2022, powered by coal and fuel oil, it will place the so-called BESS Tocopilla, an energy storage system of 660 MWh, with an installed capacity of 116 MW. In Tocopilla, in the Antofagasta region, Engie will install 240 containers based on lithium-ion batteries, giving BESS Tocopilla an average annual generation of 211 GWh. Currently in the engineering stage, BESS Tocopilla, the fifth project based on Engies Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Chile, is estimated to begin construction next June. Engie claims to currently have two storage systems in operation: BESS Coya (139 MW/638 MWh), commissioned last month ; and BESS Arica, in the Arica and Parinacota region that served as a pilot project, active since 2018. To this must be added two more under construction: BESS Tamaya (68 MW/418 MWh) and BESS Capricornio (48 MW/264 MWh) , which, like BESS Coya, are located in the Antofagasta region. Once all of them are operational, Engie will have an installed capacity of 371 MW/2 GWh in BESS.
