Romania has marked a significant milestone in its energy sector with the launch of the country’s largest electric energy storage facility, a collaborative venture between Prime Batteries Technology and Monsson. This groundbreaking project is part of the Mireasa Wind Park’s first hybrid photovoltaic-wind-battery initiative, representing a pivotal step in Romania’s renewable energy landscape.
Located in Constan?a county, the newly operational storage unit boasts an impressive capacity of 24 MWh, laying the groundwork as the initial phase of a more extensive plan. By 2025, the project aims to expand this capacity to a monumental 216 MWh across three stages, setting a new benchmark for energy storage on the continent. The facility harnesses energy from the existing 50MW Mireasa wind farm and the forthcoming 35MW Galbiori 2 PV farm, slated for grid connection in 2024, with the provision to also draw power from the national grid as needed. Automation and remote control operations are streamlined through an advanced, proprietary software system developed by Monsson.
Vicentiu Ciobanu, CEO of Prime Batteries, highlighted the project’s scale and ambition, noting that the 24 MWh storage, comprising 132 battery strings and over 114,000 lithium-ion cells, is among the top five in Europe by size. It’s projected to become the continent’s largest upon completion. The project, supported by EIT InnoEnergy and reflecting significant European engineering and manufacturing prowess, is celebrated for enhancing Europe’s energy resilience and autonomy. Razvan Nicolescu, EIT Governing Board member and Marcin Wasilewski, CEO of EIT InnoEnergy Central Europe, praised the initiative for its contribution to the European battery value chain and its potential to emerge as a success story in renewable energy storage. |
