Work Detail A report from the Brazilian Electric Vehicle Association (ABVE) maintains that the growth is the result of investments in charging infrastructure, incentives from the Governments Mover program, a wide range of models and advertising campaigns. Plug-ins represented 5% of all light vehicle registrations in the month, including all engines. With 13,613 registrations of light electric vehicles in Brazil, March closes the first quarter of 2024 as the second best month in the historical series of the Brazilian Electric Vehicle Association (ABVE). From January to March, sales of electrified vehicles totaled 36,090 and broke a new record, with an increase of 145% compared to the same period last year (14,786). The 13,613 license plates issued in March represent an increase of 127% compared to March 2023 (5,989). Compared to February 2024 (10,451), the increase was 30%. Sales for the month were only surpassed by the record for December 2023 (16,279). This performance is due to several factors, says ABVE, including investments in charging infrastructure, incentives from the governments Mover program, a wide range of models and advertising campaigns from automakers. “The figures confirm what we have been saying for several months: the Brazilian consumer increasingly likes electric vehicles and opts for more modern and sustainable products,” says the president of ABVE, Ricardo Bastos. “This process tends to deepen, as long as the Government continues to give the appropriate signals, as it has done until now,” he added. “The result will be the development of a broad productive and industrial chain associated with electric transportation in Brazil and the consolidation of electromobility as one of the technological paths for the decarbonization of the economy,” concluded Ricardo Bastos. Plug-in The first quarter of 2024 also consolidated the leadership of light plug-in electric vehicles (BEV -battery electric car- +PHEV -plug-in hybrid electric car-) in the Brazilian market, with 24,766 registrations, that is, 68% of the 36,090 electrified vehicles sold in the period. These figures are especially important, since they represent a total share of 5.1% of total national sales of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles of all types of motorization in the period (483,303, according to Fenabrave). This means that the Brazilian market for plug-in vehicles (that can be recharged externally) has already surpassed the symbolic milestone of 5% of the total sales of the automotive sector. This rate is known internationally as the consolidation threshold of a new technology. In the first quarter, 14,134 100% electric BEVs were sold, which represents a significant increase of 614% in this segment compared to the same period in 2023 (1,980). Regarding PHEV plug-in hybrids, sales amounted to 10,632 vehicles in the first quarter, also with a strong increase of 114% compared to the first quarter of 2023 (4,959). In the first quarter, the market share of electrified vehicles of all technologies in total national sales in the period was even higher: 7.5% (36,090, out of 483,303 – Fenabrave). In March, the 13,613 license plates issued in the month reached an even greater market share: 8% (more than 175,982 units, according to the National Federation of Motor Vehicle Distribution, Fenabrave). The growing market share figures reinforce ABVEs forecast that electrified vehicles could reach 10% of the sectors total sales this year. Technologies In the breakdown by technology, 100% electric BEVs continue to dominate registrations in the light electrified segment, not only in March, but throughout the quarter. In March, BEV sales amounted to 6,137 units, an impressive 945% more than in the same period of the previous year (587). PHEV plug-in hybrids registered 3,128 registrations in March, 49% more than in the same month last year. However, compared to February (3,594), there was a 13% decrease in this segment. Regarding traditional hybrids HEV (hybrid electric cars) and MHEV (semi-hybrid electric cars), 4,348 units were registered in March, of which 2,020 were flex hybrids (HEV flex), 1,221 gasoline hybrids and 1,107 mild hybrids (MHEV). . This result represents a 31.5% increase in sales of non-plug-in hybrids compared to March 2023 (3,307). Compared to February of this year (3,218), the increase was 35%.
