Work Detail Shorty Cakes iced their first year with a sweet layer of celebration on Sept. 2.

Owned and operated by Sam and Jonathan Mills, ShortyCakes moved to their current location at 522 W. Chickasha Ave. in January.

On Friday, the bakery business welcomed all to attend a special evening of free food, drinks and–of course–dessert.

Attendees selected from a wide variety of cupcakes, cookies and pies on display in the glass counter at the front desk. ShortyCakes prepared over 15 dozen cupcakes for the day. Flavors included wedding cake, salted caramel and a new flavor: Harry Potter Butter Beer. These are just a few of the 130 flavors that ShortyCakes has made. Sam said that they frequently offer and/or create new flavors.

To balance a little savory with the sweet, ShortyCakes also served free slices of pizza from Pizza Hut.

ShortyCakes offers a daily lunch special for $5. On the day of the party, the special was chicken spaghetti, green beans and italian bread.

The bakery was full of guests, some seated at large spools that had been repurposed into tables. The little bit rustic, little bit fancy decor prepared guests for the grand opening of Ruby in the Ruff Designs, a home decor boutique located within ShortyCakes.

Ruby in the Ruff is owned by Deborah Stevens, who has been refurbishing furniture and making home decor creations for eight years. Stevens opened her business online eight months ago and said she is pleased to have physical location downtown.

In addition to refurbished furniture–such as large wooden spools made into tables–Stevens makes wreaths out of burlap. She also creates hand painted signs and drink tumblers with the customer's favorite phrase, quote or song lyric.

Customization is one of Steven's specialties. She will be at the location in ShortyCakes two or three times a week, but her business card is always available. Stevens said she enjoys working with customers to create new refurbished decor.

"I love being challenged with new stuff," she said.
