Work Detail In a significant move towards sustainability and resilience, the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Lebanon and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) have inked an agreement to implement renewable energy solutions in Greater Beirut. The project aims to support and reinforce the operations of public facilities in the area, ensuring the continuity of essential services, particularly during emergencies and times of crisis. The initiative, titled “Improving the ability of public facilities and institutions to better respond to emerging needs and emergencies in Greater Beirut, through strengthened operational capacity,” will focus on two Civil Defense centres situated in Beirut and Furn El Chebbak, as well as the Municipality of Beirut. The project kicked off at the Municipality of Beirut, with the presence of key stakeholders including the Polish Ambassador to Lebanon, Mr. Przemyslaw Niesiolowski, Governor of Beirut, Mr Marwan Abboud, and Head of UN-Habitat Lebanon Country Programme, Ms. Taina Christiansen. As part of the Lebanon Response Plan, the project will involve supplying and installing photovoltaic systems to ensure a constant and reliable energy supply to the selected institutions. This initiative aligns with efforts to address emerging needs and emergencies in Greater Beirut, contributing to community resilience and sustainable development. Mr. Przemyslaw Niesiolowski, the Polish Ambassador in Beirut, emphasized the significance of strengthening the capabilities of the Lebanese Civil Defense and the Municipality of Beirut, highlighting Poland’s commitment to supporting these institutions. Similarly, Mr. Marwan Abboud, Governor of the City of Beirut, underscored the importance of proactive measures in enhancing essential services and community resilience. General Raymond Khattar, Director General of Civil Defense, praised the initiative for its positive impact on enhancing Civil Defense capabilities, particularly in dealing with emergency situations. He emphasized the importance of such programs in maintaining public safety, especially during times of war or natural disasters. Ms. Taina Christiansen expressed gratitude for the partnership with Poland, emphasizing the shared commitment to supporting the people of Lebanon during challenging times. This initiative reflects the ongoing efforts to strengthen public institutions and improve access to essential services, ultimately aiming to make a meaningful difference in the lives of communities residing in Greater Beirut.
