Enel Green Power Spain, a subsidiary of Endesa specializing in renewable energy, is set to construct the largest solar energy plant with battery storage in the Canary Islands. This groundbreaking project, located within the Barranco de Tirajana power plant in San Bartolomé de Tirajana municipality, represents an investment of approximately 11.5 million euros. With an installed capacity of 9.3 MW, equivalent to powering over three thousand homes and sustaining about 7,500 people, the El Matorral photovoltaic plant is slated to commence operations by early 2026.
Spanning approximately eight hectares of land, equivalent to eight football fields, the plant will utilize state-of-the-art technology and boast 15,000 latest-generation photovoltaic modules. Upon reaching full operational capacity, the El Matorral solar enclave is projected to save 1,874.5 tons of CO2 emissions annually—an environmental impact akin to planting nearly 94 thousand trees or establishing a forest spanning 74 hectares.
This initiative receives subsidies from the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE) as part of the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan, funded by the European Union’s Next Generation funds, amounting to 5,691,261.23 euros. With this support, Endesa in the Canary Islands adds to its portfolio of similar facilities across Spain, boasting a total production capacity exceeding 600 MW.
Endesa is currently engaged in preliminary procedures following authorization, encompassing civil works construction, essential equipment provision, and critical supplies acquisition. The project includes environmental measures to mitigate its impact, such as integrating anthropized lands within the Barranco de Tirajana Power Plant and implementing topographical corrections to prevent soil erosion.
The construction phases of the park are anticipated to generate direct and indirect employment for approximately twenty workers. Concurrently, extensive landscaping featuring native plant species will be implemented to enhance ecosystems and provide a significant vegetative screen, aiding in the rehabilitation of lands historically affected by human activity.
