Work Detail In an effort to meet its ambitious target of achieving 500 gigawatts (GW) of non-fossil energy capacity, India is making significant strides in advancing its renewable energy sector. The 4th Edition of the International Conference on Stationary Energy Storage India (SESI) 2024 provided a platform for over 250 industry leaders, government officials, and representatives from partner countries to discuss strategies and challenges related to renewable energy integration. The conference highlighted India’s transition towards a more diversified energy mix, with an emphasis on increasing the penetration of renewables such as solar and wind. Experts underscored the importance of addressing system integration challenges to expand energy storage capacity, which plays a crucial role in balancing supply and demand in the grid. Shri Dinesh Jagdale, Joint Secretary of India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, emphasized the need for advanced battery energy storage systems (BESS) to support India’s evolving energy landscape. He highlighted the role of the Ministry in promoting manufacturing best practices and fostering the development of stationary storage applications. Dr. Rahul Walawalkar, President of the India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA), expressed optimism about India’s potential for rapid deployment of BESS and pumped hydro projects. He emphasized the readiness of the SESI Council to collaborate on policy initiatives aimed at accelerating energy storage deployment in the country. Addressing the need for an integrated policy framework, Shri Rajnath Ram, Adviser (Energy) at NITI Aayog, stressed the importance of expanding energy storage infrastructure to meet future demand growth. He emphasized the necessity of a comprehensive approach to building storage systems within India. Debi Prasad Dash, Executive Director of IESA, highlighted the significance of increasing energy storage capacity to address challenges posed by the variable nature of renewable energy sources. He emphasized the need for innovative solutions to ensure grid stability and reliability. The Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited (SECI) recently commissioned a significant grid-connected storage project in Chhattisgarh, demonstrating the country’s commitment to expanding energy storage infrastructure. Prashant Upadhyay, Senior Manager at SECI, discussed the importance of cost reductions in battery energy storage to drive widespread adoption. Mani Khurana, Senior Energy Specialist at The World Bank, emphasized the importance of collaboration between government, industry, and financial institutions to drive sustainable growth in the energy storage sector. The SESI 2024 conference, organized by the SESI Council, brought together key stakeholders from the energy sector to discuss advancements in stationary energy storage. Participants included government agencies, regulatory bodies, industry leaders, and experts from various organizations, reflecting a collaborative effort to drive India’s energy transition.
