Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) continues to set new standards in energy and water provision, ensuring a safe, reliable, and sustainable supply for the residents of Dubai. Committed to meeting the UN Sustainable Development Goal 6, DEWA’s advanced infrastructure and pioneering projects position it as a global leader in utility performance.
In 2023, DEWA achieved remarkable results, reducing line losses in electricity transmission and distribution networks to 2%, surpassing European and American utilities. Water transmission and distribution network losses were also minimized to 4.6%, setting a new benchmark compared to North America.
DEWA’s groundbreaking projects, including the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park and the Hatta pumped-storage hydroelectric power plant, underscore its dedication to renewable energy and energy storage. The Green Hydrogen project further emphasizes its commitment to innovative and sustainable energy solutions.
Water reservoir projects, such as those in Lusaily, Nakhali, Hassyan, and Hatta, aim to enhance water flow and storage capacity, ensuring Dubai’s water security amidst growing demand.
DEWA’s excellence extends to its management systems, including the Water Smart Distribution Management System, which minimizes water network losses, and preventive maintenance systems that predict cable faults and extend the lifespan of distribution cables.
The implementation of the Automatic Smart Grid Restoration System further enhances DEWA’s operational efficiency, ensuring uninterrupted power supply through automated fault detection and restoration.
Looking ahead, DEWA aims to increase its gross installed capacity to 20 GW and 730 MIGD of desalinated water by 2030, with over 27% of energy generated from renewable sources. Additionally, plans are underway to add 240 MIGD of desalination capacity using reverse osmosis technology, reaffirming DEWA’s commitment to sustainable development and innovation. |
