The highly anticipated construction of NS Square at Singapore’s iconic Marina Bay officially started on Tuesday (March 19), setting the stage for its anticipated completion by 2027. This ambitious redevelopment project, first announced in 2017, involves transforming the existing floating platform into a landmark destination that pays homage to the nation’s unwavering commitment to national service. While initially slated for completion by the end of 2025, the project faced unavoidable delays due to the unprecedented challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
At the groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday, Defense Minister Ng Eng Hen shared his vision for NS Square, portraying it as a future national landmark deeply resonating with all Singaporeans. This highlights the enduring importance of the development, symbolizing the sacrifices and steadfast commitment of the nation’s servicemen and women.
With construction now underway, anticipation builds for the realization of this monumental project, which promises to etch an indelible mark on Singapore’s iconic skyline while fostering a deeper appreciation for the invaluable contributions of those who have answered the call to serve their nation.
“NS Square aspires to serve as a haven for NSmen and their loved ones, fostering an atmosphere where they can revel in the tranquility and progress of Singapore, a nation they’ve safeguarded throughout the years,” he expressed.
He highlighted the significance of NS Square, describing it as an additional gem in the majestic Marina Bay skyline, dedicated exclusively to NSmen and their families, symbolizing the profound gratitude of the nation.
Once completed, NS Square will house a permanent stage and grandstand for large-scale annual events like the National Day Parade and Marina Bay year-end countdown.
According to statements from the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) and Ministry of National Development (MND), the circular grandstand bowl of NS Square, featuring cantilevered structures stretching up to 25 meters, will mark a pioneering achievement in Southeast Asia.
New capacity for NS Square at Marina Bay
The seats, which curve elegantly around the stage, will accommodate a vast crowd of about 30,000 people – significantly more than the 27,000 that the former venue, The Float @ Marina Bay, could hold.
According to the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) and the Ministry of National Development (MND), this space can be reconfigured to host diverse events such as concerts, sports competitions, or even recreational activities and lively weekend markets.
Enriching the overall experience, the venue will house an array of public amenities. Delectable eateries will satiate any craving, while an water sports centre dedicated to canoeing, kayaking, and dragon-boating will beckon adventure seekers. Further elevating the offerings, an elevated swimming pool promises a refreshing escape.

It will display hardware from the Singapore Armed Forces, Singapore Police Force and Singapore Civil Defense Force, providing visitors an up-close look at the actual equipment and gear utilized by these esteemed servicemen and servicewomen in carrying out their duties. Additionally, the gallery will house an immersive exhibition space that brings the experiences of national service to life through multimedia displays and interactive exhibits. Visitors can also look forward to a dedicated viewing gallery that offers panoramic vistas of Singapore’s iconic city skyline, serving as a powerful backdrop that highlights what these brave men and women steadfastly protect through their service. |
