Work Detail Standardisation strategy claims to make offshore wind more affordable New electrical engineering venture Scanel Green Energy says it can reduce system design costs by 25% as part of its new standardisation strategy. Launched today at the Wind Europe Bilbao summit Scanel Green Energy’s Visionary Strategy - ‘Step Up 2030’ – vows to make offshore wind more affordable and keep the industry on track to hit net zero in 2030. "The industry can become smarter, leaner and faster by following a standardised and collaborative strategy. It can reduce project cost and complexity," said Scanel Green Energy’s chief operating officer Torben Hvid Larsen (pictured: right). "Through Step Up 2030 we can make a difference in the marketplace by standardising electrical equipment for monopiles and transition pieces and creating modular systems which are not country specific." However, he said that it would be impractical to create an airline level of standardisation in the industry. He said: "You always have to adapt to the needs and requirements of the OEMs and utilities and be able to respond. "It is about scaling up and down standardised equipment from a dimension perspective to fit whatever tower size or unique demand your customer has. "But standardisation and modularisation can be an answer to bring down costs, deliver more volume and maintain high quality standards." Scanel Green Energy, the new renewables electrical engineering arm of Danish engineering firm Scanel International said it had created three pillars to its strategy following internal reviews and customer discussions, According to Larsen these pillars are - greater up front design collaboration for its electrical equipment with its customers with a goal of reducing system design cost by 25%. More time to test & prototype electrical systems with the aim of reducing project duration by 15% and a reduction of skilled workers onsite to reduce hours by 15%, he said. “The industry has to collaborate and find solutions to meet 2030 targets,” Larsen added. "We believe we are the first movers in this. We have the expertise. It is time for us to take the step and say yes, we can do standardisation in the industry."
