Work Detail ENGIE has received the green light from the National Electricity Coordinator (CEN) for the commencement of commercial operations at BESS Coya, which is now the largest battery energy storage system in Latin America. The facility boasts a substantial 638 MWh of storage capacity and a robust 139 MW of installed power. Situated in the Antofagasta Region, this cutting-edge Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) leverages lithium battery technology to efficiently store renewable energy produced by the adjacent Coya PV solar plant, which has a generation capacity of 180 MWac. The system’s 232 modules are designed to capture and store up to five hours of electricity, making it possible to supply the grid with power during high demand periods. Annually, BESS Coya is expected to contribute around 200 GWh to the grid. This initiative not only underscores ENGIE’s commitment to sustainable energy but also significantly contributes to environmental preservation by powering approximately 100,000 homes with clean energy and reducing CO2 emissions by 65,000 tonnes each year. Paulo Almirante, ENGIE’s Senior Executive Vice President for Renewables & Energy Management, highlighted the project’s alignment with ENGIE’s broader goals. He emphasized the company’s dedication to advancing battery storage technology, aiming for a total of 10 GW of installed capacity by 2030. Almirante noted the critical role of flexible solutions like BESS in facilitating the integration of renewable sources into the energy mix, thus spearheading a more rapid transition to sustainable energy while ensuring system efficiency, reliability, and security. As of the end of 2023, ENGIE has already achieved 1.3 GW of operational battery capacity worldwide, with an additional 3.6 GW in development.
