Work Detail Researchers led by Australias Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) have recorded 11% efficiency in large-scale 50cm² solar panels composed of hybrid perovskite solar cells manufactured in an optimized roll-to-roll manner. An international team of researchers led by Australias CSIRO has achieved record efficiency in the production of fully roll-to-roll printed flexible solar cells. In tests carried out under ambient conditions, the team recorded an efficiency of 11% on large-scale 50 cm² solar panels composed of hybrid perovskite solar cells manufactured in an optimized roll-to-roll manner and up to 15.5% efficiency in individual cells of reduced area. According to the CSIRO, increasing output while maintaining efficiency has long been an obstacle for printed solar cell technology, with many researchers achieving efficiency levels of 1% to 2% in fully printed flexible solar panels. The researchers hybrid perovskite solar cell modules consist of cells interconnected in series, produced entirely with industrial newspaper-like roll-to-roll printing tools, and replace metal electrodes with perovskite-compatible carbon electrodes. . The team used automated manufacturing and screening systems capable of producing and testing more than 10,000 solar cells per day. This allowed them to quickly determine the ideal settings for the various parameters, resulting in a substantial increase in efficiency. According to the CSIRO, the results are the culmination of more than a decade of research and development. It is now actively seeking industrial partners to further develop and commercialize the technology. According to the researchers, printed flexible solar cells could be used in sectors such as defense, emergency management, construction, agriculture, mining, space exploration and urban infrastructure. The shorter energy recovery time of their solar cells and their low expected costs make them an economical and environmentally attractive renewable energy solution. The researchers estimate a cost of about $0.70 for a production rate of 1,000,000 m² per year in Australia, with potential for further significant cost reductions. The CSIRO project has been carried out in collaboration with researchers from the University of Cambridge, Monash University, the University of Sydney and the University of New South Wales. The research, titled “ The first demonstration of entirely roll-to-roll fabricated solar cell modules under ambient room conditions ,” has been published in the issue 15 of the journal Nature Communications .
