while the REIPPP Programme has not awarded the wind energy sector any projects since Bid Window 4 announced bidders in 2015, SAWEA is seeing private power projects step up to the plate. During a discussion on SAWEA and SAPVIAs response to the draft Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) 2023, SAWEA CEO Niveshen Govender was excited to talk about Enel Green Power South Africa breaking ground on the three Impofij wind farms in the Eastern Cape to provide electricity to Sasol and Air Liquides oxygen production facility from 2026. The projects will consist of 57 turbines, eight high-voltage substations, as well as 120km of 132kV high-voltage overhead electricity lines and will provide up to 330MW of renewable energy via a wheeling framework agreement with Eskom to Sasols Secunda site in Mpumalanga. Were happy they closed [financially] and are now moving into construction. So, we are getting wind turbines in the country again after almost five years, Govender told ESI Africa after the discussion. Were seeing a pipeline of more than 2GW of private [wind] projects that will close soon. The online networking session on 13 March was a chance for SAWEA and SAPVIA members to discuss their joint submission to DMRE on the draft IRP 2023. |
