Work Detail The first phase of mines’ auction in Karnataka had seen a poor response from the industry.

This round of auction, across five states, could see mines bearing minerals like gold, diamond and iron ore coming up for auction.

A senior government official on Monday said that five states -- Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Jharkhand -- would offer 29 mines for auction. It is expected to commence from the third week of September, he added.

Karnataka was expected to begin the auction process for 14 iron ore mines by August this year after it was delayed on account of issues relating to stamp duty. But, no official could be reached for their comment.

In July 2015, the Supreme Court had directed Karnataka to commence the auction of 15 ‘C’ category iron ore mines in which end-user firms dealing in steel, sponge iron or pelletisation only would be able to take part.

The state government had in September 2013 cancelled 51‘C’ category mining leases following an apex court order. This time too there are 14 iron ore mines up for grabs. There are 12 blocks of limestone and one block each of gold, diamond and copper, said the official.

According to people in the know, there would be good response for iron ore mines, gold and diamond too will see interest. Meanwhile, the reported slump in the cement sector has taken away the interest in limestone blocks.
