Work Detail In a joint effort, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and Attapeu Provincial Office have delivered a solar-powered irrigation system to the Attapeu Provincial Agriculture and Forestry Office (PAFO) during a significant ceremony held in Inthy Village, Sanamxay District This collaborative initiative is part of the “Building Climate-Resilient and Eco-friendly Agriculture Systems and Livelihoods” (Climate REAL) project, generously funded by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA). The overarching goal of Climate REAL is to enhance Attapeu Province’s resilience to climate disasters while advocating for sustainable agricultural practices. Under the strategic vision of the project, seven villages, including Inthy, were selected for the installation of these innovative irrigation systems. Targeting rural areas with limited access to electricity, these systems harness renewable energy sources to address water scarcity. During discussions about project progress and future collaboration, FAO Representative Ms. Kyung-Mee Kim met with Attapeu Governor Mr. Vanthong Kongmany. Ms. Kim underscored the meticulous selection process, emphasizing collaboration with local authorities to identify villages “lacking water but with hardworking farmers, aiming to create meaningful change.” Highlighting the positive impact on rice production, Ms. Kim stated, “Rice and Seed Production Groups have shown excellent results in 2023 yields. This can be the first step towards Attapeu’s self-sufficiency in high-quality rice seeds.” Expressing gratitude, Attapeu Province Vice Governor Mr. Khamboun Duangpabang acknowledged FAO’s continued support in ensuring food security, improving nutrition, and promoting agribusiness. He noted the broader impact of the project, stating, “The knowledge and skills of thousands in target villages have greatly improved. With provided resources, villagers can enjoy higher agricultural outputs, improved livelihoods, and reduced poverty.” This collaborative effort not only addresses immediate agricultural needs but also fosters long-term sustainability and resilience in Attapeu Province.
