Work Detail In a landmark initiative aimed at combating climate change and promoting environmental sustainability, the Ministry of Coal in India has unveiled a comprehensive plan to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the coal and lignite sectors. Announced in line with the Prime Minister’s ambitious ‘Panchamrit’ pledge at COP-26, this initiative seeks to align with the nation’s goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2070. The Ministry is prioritizing the integration of renewable energy sources, with a particular focus on solar power, to transition towards net zero electricity consumption across Coal and Lignite Public Sector Units (PSUs). Under this new directive, coal companies are encouraged to expedite the installation of solar energy systems, including both rooftop and ground-mounted solar panels, across their operations. This effort is further supported by plans to develop solar parks on reclaimed mining lands, thereby utilizing underutilized spaces for clean energy generation. Noteworthy progress has been made, with key players like Coal India Limited (CIL), NLC India Limited (NLCIL), and SCCL already achieving a combined solar capacity of approximately 1700 MW, complemented by an additional 51 MW from wind energy. The ministry’s target is ambitious, aiming to expand the renewable energy capacity of the coal sector to over 9 GW by 2030. This move is not only expected to drastically reduce carbon emissions but also to foster technological innovation, stimulate economic growth, and create new job opportunities within the renewable energy sector. By adopting these green initiatives, the Ministry of Coal is setting a precedent for sustainable energy practices in India, illustrating the country’s dedication to securing a resilient and sustainable energy future. This initiative represents a critical step towards India’s transition to a green economy, highlighting the nation’s commitment to environmental stewardship and socio-economic development on a global stage.
