Work Detail A cutting-edge solar-powered Electric Vehicle Charging Station (EVCS) was inaugurated in Pasig City as part of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Department of Transportation’s (DOTr) Low Carbon Urban Transport Systems (LCT) Project. With three charging terminals servicing six electric vehicles (EVs) simultaneously, the facility represents a significant stride towards sustainable and eco-friendly transportation. The launch ceremony, held at the Pasig Kabuhayan Center, witnessed the presence of key figures such as UNDP Philippines Resident Representative Dr. Selva Ramachandran, DOTr Undersecretary Anneli Lontoc, Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto, and other government officials, emphasizing the collaborative efforts involved. The EVCS primarily targets Pasig City’s fleet of light electric vehicles, including e-trikes, e-quads, and e-bikes. Additionally, it opens its doors to the public, accommodating personal mobility EVs such as e-scooters, electric cars, SUVs, and select electric jeepney models. Mayor Vico Sotto praised the EVCS as a crucial addition to the city’s renewable energy initiatives, aligning with their commitment to a sustainable future. “Through the adoption of EVs, we are addressing the country’s major concerns such as air pollution and traffic congestion,” emphasized Undersecretary Lontoc. Dr. Ramachandran highlighted the local talent behind the EV charging station technology, showcasing the potential of Filipino innovation. The facility’s solar-powered nature ensures resilience during blackouts and allows surplus solar power export to the grid, leading to substantial electricity bill savings. Pasig City has ambitious plans to expand the facility, incorporating fast-charging capabilities. The UNDP-DOTr LCT Project operates in four pilot areas including Baguio, Iloilo, Pasig, and Sta. Rosa aims to create an environment conducive to low-carbon urban transport systems, emphasizing policy support, institutional capacity development, awareness, and strategic investments.
