Work Detail The European Commission has initiated discussions with the Cypriot communities in Cyprus following the results of an EU-funded pre-feasibility study for establishing the first bi-communal solar power plant in Cyprus. The study, financed under the EU aid program for the Turkish Cypriot community, envisions a 36MW solar power plant in the buffer zone with photovoltaics and batteries for 3-hour storage. If agreed upon, this joint investment could be a significant confidence-building measure, promoting bi-communal cooperation on energy and contributing to the greening of electricity systems in both communities. The project may serve as a model for future solar energy investments in Cyprus, enhancing the island’s energy supply and storage capabilities. The European Commission is prepared to support the next steps, including an international tender for the plant’s design and construction. Director-General Mario Nava highlighted the project’s potential to bring communities closer, foster energy cooperation, and align with the EU’s Green Deal goals.
