Work Detail Engineering outfit will work on TWP’s 1GW Ayre floater and 1GW fixed bottom Bowden project COWI has been awarded a contract to conduct pre-front end engineering design (FEED) studies for two offshore wind projects off Scotland. Thistle Wind Partners (TWP), a joint venture involving DEME, Qair and Aspiravi, awarded the pre-FEED contract for its Ayre and Bowdun projects. The two offshore wind farms are planned to enter construction in 2029 and are expected to produce more than 2GW of energy by 2032/2033. COWI will provide analysis for the foundation design of each project. Both sites were allocated as part of the ScotWind leasing round in 2022. The Ayre project, located to the east of Orkney, is a 1GW floating-foundation offshore wind farm, while Bowdun is a 1GW fixed wind project off the coast of Aberdeenshire. COWI will deliver a comprehensive pre-FEED study that integrates both electrical and civil design elements. The analysis will determine the feasibility of the development of robust electrical infrastructure, featuring inter-array cables that connect to offshore substations, enhancing power distribution efficiency for each project. COWI will also bring its experience in road and railway design to support decisions on onshore wire routing and associated crossings. Senior market director for COWI in the UK Damian McGirr said: "As a business we are committed to supporting the path to net zero and we are delighted to be collaborating with Thistle Wind on these projects which will ensure that the economic opportunity of the global energy transition is captured here in Scotland.” In 2023, COWI achieved continued high organic growth, especially within the sustainable energy, infrastructure and industrial facilities sectors. COWI’s profitability (EBIT margin) grew to 4.4% in 2023, up from 4.2% in 2022. Profit for the year increased by 48% to Dkr236m. Group chief executive Jens Højgaard Christoffersen said: “Our focus on joining forces with our customers to transition to a more sustainable future is paying off. “Especially in our core markets and within our strategic prioritised sectors: sustainable energy, climate adaptation and water, large buildings and infrastructure. “Im delighted to see that our strategy is working. “Together with our customers, we want to make a considerable difference in the green transition, while severing all ties between our society and totalitarian regimes. “To do that, we need to invest significantly more in new knowledge and technology.”
