In addition to being the first long-term exclusive for renewable energies in the last 10 years in Panama, it is also the first in the Central American region to incorporate battery storage systems.
The National Secretariat of Energy of Panama (SNE) announced the issuance of resolution No. MIPRE-2024-0001384, which urges the Electric Transmission Company SA (ETESA) to develop the specifications to tender “the long-term acquisition of energy, power and energy associated with the main objective of guaranteeing the supply of electrical energy, improving the affordability of electricity prices and promoting the creation of green jobs,” as he explains.
500 MW of power will be tendered and a 20-year contract will be signed with the electricity distribution companies. In addition, it will incorporate battery storage systems. According to the Government, "this tender marks a milestone as it is the first long-term tender exclusively for renewable energies in the last 10 years in Panama and the first in the Central American region that includes storage."
The SNE explains that the projected investment is close to 400 million balboas (400 million dollars), and will focus on new or existing renewable power plants. Supply by the contracted companies will begin on September 1, 2026 for existing renewable plants and until January 1, 2029 for new renewable plants. It is expected to create up to 4,600 new local jobs.
The public tender is scheduled for the first four months of 2024, and the specifications will be published throughout the month of February. According to IRENA statistics from March 2023, Panama had an estimated 522 MW of photovoltaics. |
