Work Detail Adani Group is developing the largest single-location copper manufacturing plant at Mundra in Gujarat. The USD 1.2-billion facility will commence operations of the first phase by March-end and full-scale of one million tonne capacity by FY29 (March 2029). Strategically located in Kutch, the copper plant will produce copper cathodes and rods as well as valuable byproducts such as gold, silver, selenium and platinum. Additionally, the integrated complex will produce sulphuric acid, which is a key raw material for manufacturing phosphatic fertilisers, detergents, pharmaceuticals, speciality chemicals, paper and sugar bleaching, and water treatment. India imports roughly two million tonnes of sulphuric acid. The copper complex construction (Phase-I) is in the advanced stages, and the plant is expected to be operational in 2024. Kutch Copper will be one of the most efficient copper smelters in India, with lower greenhouse gas emissions. The plant will help reduce Indias reliance on copper imports and support the countrys energy transition. For Phase-I, capacity of 0.5 million tpa, KCL achieved financial closure through a syndicated club loan in June 2022. The plant will produce 500,000 tonne of refined copper per annum in the initial phase with byproducts, nearly 25 tonne of gold, 250 tonne of silver, 1.5 million tonne of sulphuric acid, and 250,000 tonne of phosphoric acid. The Phase-II expansion will increase the refined copper capacity up to one million tpa. Kutch Copper (KCL), a subsidiary of the groups flagship Adani Enterprises (AEL), is setting up a greenfield copper refinery project for the production of refined copper with one million tpa capacity in two phases. The Group seeks to become a global leader in the copper business, leveraging the Adani Groups strong position in resource logistics, renewable power, and infrastructure. It aims to be the largest copper smelting complex by 2030. On the operational front, the company is engaged in long-term supply agreements for the key raw material, copper concentrate. This, along with strategic location and integrated value chain advantage, will help Kutch Copper to be one of the most sustainable and lowest-cost copper producers in the world. Considering the Groups ESG priorities, the plants sustainable solution-based project design will have zero liquid discharge. It will explore using green power and deploying byproducts for cement and other businesses.
