The first steel cutting of the monopiles for RWE’s Thor offshore wind farm in Denmark has taken place at Dajin Offshore Heavy Industry’s Penglai facility in China, marking the start of the project’s construction phase.
In April 2023, Dajin was selected to deliver 36 monopiles as well as secondary structures and electrical outfitting for the 1 GW Thor offshore wind farm, located in the Danish North Sea, approximately 22 kilometres from Thorsminde on the west coast of Jutland.
The remaining 36 monopiles will be manufactured by EEW SPC.
A few months later, the Chinese manufacturer signed deals for internal platforms to be delivered by Wulkan Shipyard from Szczecin, Poland, electrical outfitting including installation from ProCon Wind Energy headquartered in Aalborg, Denmark, and concrete external working platforms from the Polish subsidiary of Per Aarsleff, Denmark.
The monopiles will support Siemens Gamesa SG 14-236 DD wind turbines. 40 of the 72 SG 14-236 DD wind turbines will be equipped with recyclable rotor blades manufactured by Siemens Gamesa. Installation at sea is expected in 2026.
To connect the wind farm to the Danish grid, RWE will build two new substations – one at sea and one on land.
RWE, through the project company Thor Wind Farm I/S, was announced as the winner of the Danish tender for the Thor offshore wind farm at the beginning of December 2021.
Once fully commissioned in 2027, the 1 GW project will become Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm and will be capable of producing enough green electricity to supply the equivalent of more than one million Danish households. |
