Tyra II, the largest natural gas field in Denmark is expected to start operating again in March 2024 as scheduled. This came to light following an update on the progress and timeline of the Tyra Redevelopment Project by BlueNord, an independent international petroleum company based in Norway.
Previously known as the Norwegian Energy Company (Noreco), BlueNord is one of the companies that make up the consortium carrying out the Tyra Redevelopment Project. Other companies that are a part of the consortium dubbed Danish Underground Consortium (DUC) are TotalEnergies and Nordsøfonden.
TotalEnergies is the project’s largest shareholder and operator with a total of 43.2% stake. BlueNord holds a 36.8% stake while Nordsøfonden holds 20%.
Work and tests done in preparation for the launch of the Tyra II natural gas field
The scope of the Tyra II redevelopment project included the decommissioning and recycling of the old Tyra platforms as well as the recycling and extension of the platform legs of six of the field’s platforms by 13 meters. The platforms were also equipped with new topsides. The last element of the project was the establishment of a completely new process module as well as a new accommodation platform.
In preparation for the start of operation, extensive works and tests have been carried out and others are underway. The Tyra East Riser platform Echo according to BlueNord was declared hot. All pipelines at this platform have also been connected and their de-isolation, an important step towards first gas, has commenced.
At the Tyra West platform, on the other hand, the first wells have successfully been unplugged and de-watered. Two wireline teams working in parallel on the Tyra West B and C platforms unplugged the said wells.
The ongoing tests and expected completion
As far as the tests are concerned, the consortium is carrying Leak Tests, which are very important to the safety and integrity before gas-in. Functional tests of key process machinery required for processing the gas are also ongoing.
The leak tests are expected to be completed before the start of the first gas export which could support an efficient ramp-up and a reduced ramp-up period. Reportedly, the key focus before the start of the first gas export remains to ensure that the safety and emergency systems at Denmark’s largest natural gas field are fully functional.
In its REMIT notification dated Jan 22 2023, TotalEnergies said that the project progress to date indicates that the current restart date of Mar 31 2024 remains valid. This is based on the remaining level of operational uncertainty. However, depending on the Tyra II natural gas field project progress, the start of the field’s operation could even come earlier. |
