Work Detail In a new weekly update for pv magazine , OPIS, a Dow Jones company, offers a quick look at the main price trends in the global PV industry. China Mono Grade, OPISs benchmark assessment for polysilicon prices in the country, fell to 60.25 yuan ($8.40/kg) on ??Jan. 16, down 51.8% year-on-year amid a growing excess supply. Overall market sentiment remains bearish, with many participants expecting further price cuts ahead of the Lunar New Year holidays in early February. Polysilicon prices were between 54 and 65 yuan/kg, OPIS learned in its weekly market study. China produced a total of 1.45 million tons of polysilicon in 2023, up 81.4% year-on-year, according to data from the China Silicon Industry Association. Current inventory levels stood at 60,000 mt and January production is expected to reach 170,000 mt, according to the China Silicon Industry Association. Market participants do not expect these stocks to run out soon, as some companies have already purchased January and early February shipments, and say there is room for prices to decline further in the coming weeks. The recent rise in wafer prices, as manufacturers try to recover losses from previous months, is not expected to contribute to the rise in polysilicon prices, as wafer demand has not yet fully recovered . Meanwhile, the Global Polysilicon Marker (GPM), the OPIS reference for polysilicon outside China, was valued at $26.063/kg on January 16, representing a year-on-year decline of 30.7% as a result of the fall of prices in the Chinese market, according to OPIS data. OPIS, a Dow Jones company, provides energy prices, news, data and analysis on gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, LPG/LNG, coal, metals and chemicals, as well as renewable fuels and environmental commodities. In 2022 it acquired the pricing data assets of the Singapore Solar Exchange and now publishes the OPIS APAC Solar Weekly Report .
