Work Detail Aligned with Continental’s sustainability goals, the ContiTech sector has implemented tangible measures to transition its production facilities into sustainable factories. A new photovoltaic (PV) system has been installed in Timi?oara, Romania, with plans for additional locations to follow suit in the coming months. ContiTech has also identified three global production facilities as pilot projects to determine the most effective approach for achieving carbon-neutral operations. Claus-Peter Spille, Senior Vice President Operations at ContiTech, emphasized the unique challenges each production facility faces in achieving green operations by 2040 at the latest. The pilot projects aim to provide comprehensive guidance on implementing systematic operational environmental management at these locations. Philip Nelles, Member of Continental’s Executive Board for ContiTech, underscored sustainability as a significant opportunity and a key driver for innovation. He stated that the recent steps toward greener operations demonstrate Continental’s strong commitment to reducing the impact of climate change in collaboration with partners along the value chain. Expansion of Emission-Free Energy Production The PV system in Timi?oara is anticipated to generate approximately 930 MWh of emission-free electricity annually. Several other locations, including Subotica (Serbia), Szeged (Hungary), Wagrowiec (Poland), Weissbach (Germany), Changzhou (China), Kalyani (India), and Chihuahua (Mexico), have approved their own PV projects. The installations across these locations are expected to produce a yearly electricity generation of 5900 MWh, equivalent to the consumption of 2950 households in Germany. Pilot Plants for Carbon Neutrality ContiTech has selected Changzhou (China), Granby (Canada), and Dannenberg (Germany) as pilot sites for achieving carbon-neutral operations by 2030. The success of these pilot projects, driven by concrete measures and activities, will serve as a guide for other ContiTech plants worldwide. The intention is to operate carbon-neutral in Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2040 at the latest, with tailored best practices identified at each pilot location. Ambitious Sustainability Goals Continental has set specific targets for operational environmental management to transform every production facility into a green factory. By 2030, the company aims to reduce energy consumption by 20%, increase the recovery quota to 95%, and annually decrease waste generation by 2%. Additionally, Continental plans to reduce water withdrawal by 4% in high-risk water regions and by 2% in moderate-risk water regions, all relative to sales.
