President Luis Abinader issues a decree to promote the development of traditional electricity generation projects and renewable sources. The framework is the growing electricity demand that exists in the country.
The president of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, has issued a decree declaring “of high national interest the promotion and development of traditional electricity generation projects and renewable sources to be carried out in the territory of the Dominican Republic to meet the growing demand for electricity and maintaining the stability of the electrical service at the national level.”
Presidential Decree 3-24 establishes that “traditional and renewable source electricity generation projects to be executed” must adopt current legal provisions.
Among the recitals of the initiative, it is specified that in 2023 the maximum annual demand for capacity grew by approximately 14% compared to that of 2022. According to the aforementioned data, this is about 435 MW of additional energy demand “that were supplied with new generation installed in 2022 as a result of emergency tenders and the offer of energy projects of renewable origin.”
In this framework, it is added, "institutions in the electricity sector have had to exhaust public bidding processes for the construction of new generation plants and the contracting of energy projects based on renewable sources."
“The growth and diversification of the economy, the high ambient temperatures as a consequence of the effects of climate change and the increase to more than 98% in the availability of electricity throughout the country uninterruptedly 24 hours a day,” are the so-called “basic” factors in the influence of the increase in the demand for electrical energy.
It is also mentioned that the countrys generation park "does not have a sufficient reserve of useful capacity to successfully face eventualities that force the exit due to breakdowns or maintenance of one or several main generating plants." |
