Work Detail In December alone, sales reached 16,279 units, almost triple the 5,587 in December 2022, which represents an increase of 191%. In total, 93,927 electrified vehicles were registered in 2023, 91% more than the 49,245 units sold in 2022. The year 2023 made history in the electromobility segment and sales of electrified light vehicles beat all forecasts. In December alone, sales reached 16,279, almost triple the 5,587 in December 2022 – 191% more – surpassing all monthly records according to the Brazilian Association of Electric Vehicles (ABVE). In the last month of the year, plug-in vehicles represented 70% of total electrified sales - 11,371 out of a total of 16,279 - driven by the excellent performance of BYD and GWM, which launched new models with these technologies. In total, 93,927 electrified vehicles were registered in 2023, 91% more than the 49,245 units sold in 2022. Last years figures consolidate a turning point in the electrified vehicle market in Brazil, which includes Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles ( PHEV) and 100% Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV). Plug-in vehicles - which recharge their batteries externally - represented 56% of sales of light electrified vehicles in the year, with 52,359 units, surpassing gasoline and flexifuel Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) (41,568), which until 2022 were still dominating this segment. Sales anticipation in the last two months For the president of ABVE, Ricardo Bastos, the excellent result for 2023 reflects several factors, among them the announced increase in the import tax on electric and hybrid vehicles starting in January, which anticipated sales in the last two months. “The figures mainly indicate a significant evolution of this market this year, with plug-in vehicles reaching two thirds of sales in December, confirming consumer confidence and their preference for new technologies.” For ABVE, this maturity should be consolidated with the launch in December of Mover – Green Mobility and Innovation, the federal governments new program for the automotive sector. “Mover will allow companies to prepare their investment plans more clearly, both for light and heavy vehicles, such as buses and trucks, and for electric charging infrastructure,” said Bastos. In his opinion, this growth trend should continue, even with the increase in tax pressure on imported electric and hybrid vehicles. “In 2024, we are still evaluating the effect of the new import tax rates, but I can already anticipate that we will still have good surprises,” concluded the president of ABVE.
