Work Detail Brazilian power utility Companhia Paranaense de Energia (BVMF:CPLE6), better known as Copel, has said that its subsidiary Copel GT will invest BRL 3 million (USD 616,133/EUR 562,989) to build a low-carbon hydrogen pilot plant in Parana state. The hydrogen plant will use biomass as its fuel source, such as organic waste, manure, and sugarcane bagasse. The hydrogen will serve as an input to produce ammonia and urea used in fertilisers. Brazilian power sector regulator Aneel and the Association of Researchers in the Northern Region of Brazil (Apreno) are contributing to the funds for the project. The location of the project is currently being studied. Fabio Sevscuec, manager of the research project at Copel, highlights that another goal of this initiative is to enable the production of hydrogen, ammonia and urea by developing compact and modular equipment that can be used on small and medium-sized properties. Copel noted its focus in the project will be to develop technology that promotes the sustainability of the hydrogen market in Parana over the next two years. (BRL 1.0 = USD 0.205/EUR 0.188)
