Work Detail According to a study by the Brazilian Photovoltaic Solar Energy Association (Absolar), since 2012 the segment has contributed more than 125.8 billion reais (26 billion dollars) in investments and has generated more than 751,200 jobs in the country. Self-generation of solar energy has just surpassed the mark of 25 GW of installed power in homes, businesses, industries, rural properties and public buildings in Brazil. There are more than 3.2 million consumer units served by more than 2.2 million solar photovoltaic systems installed on roofs, facades and small plots. According to the Brazilian Photovoltaic Solar Energy Association (Absolar), since 2012 there have been around 125.8 billion reais in new investments, which have generated more than 751,200 jobs in the period, spread across all regions of Brazil, and represent a tax collection of 31.5 billion reais (6.4 billion dollars). Photovoltaic technology is already present in 5,548 municipalities and in all Brazilian states. According to Ronaldo Koloszuk, president of the Board of Directors of Absolar, solar energy could soon make the Brazilian electricity matrix even cleaner and renewable. “Although the 3.2 million consumer units supplied with distributed solar energy are cause for celebration, there is still a lot of room for growth, given that Brazil has around 91.8 million consumer units in the captive electricity market,” he comments. “We must follow the example of the most developed countries in this area, especially Australia, which, with good public policies, has become a world reference in the use of solar energy in homes and companies, with around 30% of the consumer units in that country served by photovoltaic systems,” says Koloszuk. The executive director of Absolar, Rodrigo Sauaia, highlights that the growth of self-generation of solar energy reinforces sustainability, relieves family budgets and increases the competitiveness of Brazils productive sectors. “Self-generation installed on roofs, facades and small plots of land, directly in urban and consumption centres, helps to strengthen and provide more resilience to the electrical network by concentrating electricity generation near the places of consumption. This reduces the use of transmission infrastructure, relieving pressure on its operation and reducing losses over long distances, contributing to reliability and security at critical times,” he explains. “The solar source is, therefore, a lever for the social, economic and environmental development of the country. The growth of self-generation of photovoltaic energy also increases the attraction of capital and drives the generation of more jobs and income for Brazilians,” concludes Sauaia.
