Work Detail SolarEdge Technologies, a leading smart energy technology company globally, has reintroduced its innovative home battery program in partnership with UK energy infrastructure company Smart Metering Systems Plc (SMS) within Great Britain’s ESO Demand Flexibility Service (DFS). Unlike homeowners compensated by the DFS for manually reducing their energy usage, SolarEdge Home Battery owners equipped with a qualifying smart meter can now earn increased financial incentives for their stored energy, aiding in grid stabilization during peak hours. With a minimum earning potential of £2 per kWh of stored battery power, participants stand to make up to £25 per event*. SolarEdge’s technology autonomously schedules battery charging before each DFS event and maximizes energy export during the event, enabling passive income for battery owners without needing manual intervention or altering their home electricity usage during peak hours. Integrating home batteries into the DFS, a pioneering move last winter, offers compelling incentives for participants. Battery owners earned up to ten times more incentives on average compared to participants compensated for manually reducing energy consumption during last winter’s DFS. The highest incentive received by a battery owner during a single DFS event reached £25.60, with an average of £6.52 per event. In contrast, UK DFS participants manually reducing energy consumption received around 90 pence per event on average. Bob Mann, a SolarEdge solar + battery owner in Farnborough, Hampshire, praised the scheme, highlighting its role in stabilizing the National Grid without requiring significant changes in home energy usage during peak hours. Furthermore, the home battery program significantly aids the grid during DFS events. Participating batteries reduced grid demand up to six times more than UK homeowners manually reducing their energy consumption. On average, battery participants exported 2.7 kWh to the grid per DFS event, compared to less than 0.5 kWh reduction in grid demand on average per manual turn-down participant. Amit Larom, VP & Regional General Manager Western Europe at SolarEdge, expressed enthusiasm for reintroducing the home battery scheme, emphasizing its role in supporting a resilient and efficient energy grid while providing financial incentives for homeowners. Mark Hamilton, Managing Director FlexiGrid at SMS, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the seamless role of home batteries in delivering grid balancing services while rewarding homeowners for participation without altering their electricity consumption behavior.
