Work Detail Morocco has reiterated its commitment to a gas pipeline project with Nigeria, saying it has the potential to provide energy security for hundreds of millions of Africans, During a speech this week to commemorate the 48th anniversary of the Green March, King Mohammed VI said the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline (NMGP) project is more than just a bilateral project between two sister nations. The annual event celebrates Moroccans march against the Spanish colonisation of the countrys southern provinces. "In fact, I want this to be a strategic project that benefits all of West Africa - a region which is home to more than 440 million people. "The NMGP provides opportunities as well as guarantees in terms of energy security and economic, industrial and social development for the fifteen ECOWAS member countries, as well as for Morocco and Mauritania." In August, Netherlands-headquartered subsea solutions provider N-Sea announced that it has expanded its area of operations to West Africa by commencing survey operations to support the development of the NMGP project. Pipeline to traverse several African countries Morocco is set to host over 1,600 kilometres of the project, which several reports have estimated will cost at least $25 billion. The pipeline will be located along the West African coast from Nigeria, going through Benin, Togo, Ghana, Cote dlvoire, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Gambia, Senegal and Mauritania to Morocco. It will be connected to the Maghreb Europe Gas Pipeline in order to reach the European gas network. It will also supply natural gas to the landlocked states of Niger, Burkina Faso and Mali. "This strategic project will help improving the living standard of the populations, the integration of the economies of the sub-region, and the reduction of the desertification thanks to a sustainable and reliable supply of gas," said ONHYM.
