Work Detail The Washington Parks Department can provide bleachers if a viewing area to watch the construction of the new Highway 47 bridge is set up on the riverfront trail.

At Monday’s Washington Area Highway Transportation Committee meeting Mayor Sandy Lucy suggested that the city erect bleachers along the trail west of the work site to allow people to watch as the project progresses.

The west part of the trail will be closed at a point west of the site where workers will be constructing the south leg of the new bridge.

At that point, fencing and a gate will be installed to keep spectators away from the bridge construction site, but it’s not certain when the fencing will be erected.

Lucy suggested the public may be interested in a viewing area to watch the new bridge get built. Parks and Recreation Director Darren Dunkle said he hasn’t heard any formal plans for a viewing area.

“I think there’s a lot of logistics we’d have to look at,” Dunkle said. “I’m not in favor or opposed to it, we just have to look and see what it would take.”

Dunkle said the parks department does have bleachers, and could use them for the project, but it will take some planning.

“We have bleachers, but the majority of our bleachers are dedicated to athletic fields and this and that,” he said. “I’m not saying we couldn’t rotate them, but right now we have a dedicated use for the bleachers in the parks system.”

Additionally Dunkle said he isn’t sure where the bleachers would be placed or how many seats would be needed. The site also hasn’t been discussed.

“We would have to go down and take a look at where they’d want to set the bleachers,” he said. “We don’t know if there’s enough room, if we’d have to do any grading to keep the bleachers level — those sorts of things.”

Tree Removal

The contractor is expected to begin clearing trees along the eastern part of the riverfront trail soon.

Last March, the city reached a final easement agreement with MoDOT that allowed the eventual contractor, Alberici, to use part of the riverfront trail during construction. The city will receive $131,900 for the easement.

That entire eastern section of the trail will be off limits for the duration of the bridge construction project.

The total portion of the trail that can be used is about 2 miles long and starts at the eastern entrance at South Point off Kingsland Drive.

At Wednesday’s park board meeting, Dunkle said he was told the work would start Tuesday, Sept. 6, weather permitting.

City staff and MoDOT crews have been on the eastern portion of the trail mapping out a possible route for Alberici to use to haul in equipment. Dunkle said trees that could be removed have been marked.

Not all of the trees marked will be removed, Dunkle said. The city has worked to minimize the loss of trees he said.

“I’m not trying to sugarcoat it — there will be trees coming down,” he said.

Some of the smaller trees may be transported to another location.
